Cavo and surroundings offer an infinite variety of ways to enjoy free time beyond seaside strolls. From water sports to trekking, from splendid bicycle rides through unspoilt landscapes, to folkloristic events, from the possibility to try local specialties, to visits to museums and cultural sites, and of course, open-air cinema.

Nature

The Great Elba Crossing (La Grande Traversata Elbana) departs from Cavo; this is a 60-km. long trail that offers incredible panoramas, and crosses the entire island.

Arte and culture

The Elban Museum of Minerals (Il Museo di Minerali Elbani)

Rio Marina, 7 km. from Cavo, surrounded by the mines of Rio Albano, Bacino, Vigneria, Monte Giove, and Ortano, already famous in Etruscan times, seems to correspond perfectly with the expression of the geologist Bernardino Lotti, who proclaimed that Elba was "a magnificent open air mineralogy museum".
And so Rio Marina hosts, on the top floor of the town hall, the Elban Museum of Minerals which offers visitors an collection of about 1,000 beautiful specimens, all exclusively from Elba.
Each mineral sample is displayed with its name, chemical composition, and provenance.
Each year in Rio Marina the mineral show "I Fiori della terra" (Flowers of the Earth) takes place. The show, held at the old San Jacopo workshop in Rio Marina, features the most important exhibitors and Italian and international collectors, who display magnificent specimens of gems and stones.
There are many side events: lectures on topics related to mineralogy and plants, guided excursions to ancient excavation areas, displays of related publications, painting exhibits and the gastronomic event "Miners' dishes".
